Ghana's music scene has found itself in another interesting debate after two of the country's biggest names, Kweku Smoke and Black Sherif, released new projects on the same day.
On September 4, 2026, Kweku Smoke released his 13-track album NO DAYS OFF, while Black Sherif dropped the six-track SUN SHERIF EP.
The coincidence immediately sparked conversations among Ghanaian music fans, with some questioning whether the two releases were simply a scheduling coincidence or whether Kweku Smoke deliberately chose the date as a statement.
Now, almost two weeks into the releases, the debate has shifted from who released the better project? to a much bigger question:
Is Kweku Smoke beginning to challenge Black Sherif's position at the top of Ghana's current rap scene?
Same Day, Different Projects
The two releases arrived with very different formats.
Kweku Smoke's NO DAYS OFF is a 13-track project, giving listeners a considerably longer body of work to consume. Black Sherif's SUN SHERIF, on the other hand, is a six-track EP built around a much shorter listening experience.
Both projects, however, immediately became major talking points across Ghana's music community.
The same-day release created an unusual situation where listeners were able to compare the two artists directly — not only based on their music, but also on their early streaming performance and chart presence.
The Fans Have Picked Sides
Social media discussions have quickly turned competitive.
One side of the conversation argues that Black Sherif's time at the top is coming to an end, with Kweku Smoke being presented as the rapper who is now taking over.
Others strongly disagree.
For those fans, Kweku Smoke's current momentum does not erase what Black Sherif has already achieved or the position he has established for himself internationally.
There is also a more provocative theory circulating among fans: that Smoke intentionally released NO DAYS OFF on the same day as SUN SHERIF to test himself against Black Sherif.
There is no verified statement from Kweku Smoke confirming that this was his intention, so it would be premature to present the theory as fact.
But the timing has certainly created the kind of competition that gets people talking.
Apple Music Gives Kweku Smoke the Early Edge
One of the clearest indicators at the moment comes from Apple Music Ghana.
As of September 15, Kweku Smoke's NO DAYS OFF is sitting at No. 1 on Ghana's Apple Music Top Albums chart, with Black Sherif's SUN SHERIF at No. 2.
That is significant because it gives Smoke the immediate advantage on one of the country's major music platforms.
The competition has also extended beyond the album chart.
Earlier in the week, Ghana Music reported that Kweku Smoke had taken the No. 1 position on Apple Music Ghana while Black Sherif's six-track EP placed all of its songs within the platform's Ghana Top 100.
That paints a more complicated picture than simply saying one artist is dominating everything.
Spotify Tells Another Story
Spotify figures circulating around the projects have also added fuel to the debate.
Reports attributed to TuneStats placed NO DAYS OFF at around 2.7 million Spotify streams during its opening week, while SUN SHERIF was reported at approximately 2.829 million opening-week streams.
Those numbers suggest that Black Sherif had a very strong opening on Spotify, despite the shorter length of his project.
There was also a report shortly after release putting SUN SHERIF at about 827,000 Spotify streams on its first day, highlighting the strength of Black Sherif's initial response on the platform.
However, these figures should be treated as opening-period figures rather than September 15 cumulative totals. Publicly available tracking does not provide sufficiently reliable, date-stamped cumulative Spotify figures for both projects specifically at the September 15 cutoff.
So, while the available opening-week numbers make for an interesting comparison, they should not be presented as a definitive statement of the artists' total streams as of September 15.
Audiomack Adds Another Layer
Audiomack also presents an interesting picture.
The platforms' publicly visible play counts have shown substantial activity around both releases, but the available figures are not sufficiently date-stamped to establish an exact September 15, 2026 snapshot.
That distinction matters.
Streaming numbers are constantly changing, and a number visible on a platform today cannot automatically be described as the number recorded on a specific date.
For that reason, the safest conclusion is that both projects are performing strongly, while the publicly verifiable data does not support claiming that Kweku Smoke is ahead of Black Sherif across every streaming platform.
So, Is Kweku Smoke the New Rap King?
Not so fast.
If the question is who currently has the stronger position on the Ghana Apple Music album chart, Kweku Smoke has the answer.
NO DAYS OFF is No. 1, while SUN SHERIF is No. 2.
But declaring a new king of Ghanaian rap based on less than two weeks of competition would be premature.
Black Sherif's position was not built from one project.
The rapper has spent years establishing a distinctive identity and an audience beyond Ghana. His breakthrough with records such as Kwaku the Traveller helped push him into the international conversation, while projects such as The Villain I Never Was and Iron Boy strengthened his position as one of Ghana's most recognisable contemporary artists.
Kweku Smoke, meanwhile, has been steadily building his own lane and has developed a reputation for street-focused Ghanaian rap.
NO DAYS OFF arriving at No. 1 on Apple Music Ghana is therefore more than just another chart result. It is evidence that Smoke currently has serious momentum.
But momentum and long-term dominance are not necessarily the same thing.
The Bigger Story Is Ghanaian Hip-Hop
Perhaps the most interesting part of the entire debate is not whether Kweku Smoke has defeated Black Sherif.
It is that two major Ghanaian rappers can release projects on the same day and generate enough attention for fans to seriously debate their numbers, chart positions and influence.
For years, Ghana's music conversation has often centred heavily around Afrobeats and highlife. Moments like this put Ghanaian rap and Hiplife back at the centre of the conversation.
And competition can be good for the culture.
If Kweku Smoke's rise pushes Black Sherif to become even more ambitious, while Black Sherif's established position pushes Smoke to go even harder, the biggest winner could ultimately be the Ghanaian hip-hop audience.
The Verdict: Too Early to Call
As of September 15, 2026, Kweku Smoke has a very strong argument when it comes to immediate chart momentum.
NO DAYS OFF is leading SUN SHERIF on Ghana's Apple Music Top Albums chart, while the available Spotify opening-week figures show that both projects attracted millions of streams.
But the available public data does not support the claim that Kweku Smoke is already ahead of Black Sherif across Spotify, Audiomack and Apple Music combined.
So is Black Sherif finished?
No.
Is Kweku Smoke making a serious case for himself?
Absolutely.
The more interesting question may not be who has dethroned whom, but whether Ghana is witnessing the beginning of a new chapter in its rap hierarchy.
For now, the numbers are moving, the fans are arguing, and both artists have given Ghanaian music something worth talking about.
The battle is far from over.
