Stonebwoy vs Sarkodie: How Old Tensions Reignited Ghana’s Latest Music Feud
Ghana’s music industry has found itself in another heated celebrity dispute, this time involving two of the country’s biggest musical exports: dancehall star Stonebwoy and rap heavyweight Sarkodie.
What initially appeared to be a message about toxic fan behaviour has developed into a much deeper public disagreement involving loyalty, accountability, old grievances, private conversations, Sarkodie’s relationship with other artistes, the 2020 Black Love Concert controversy and, unexpectedly, a plate of jollof rice.
Neither Stonebwoy nor Sarkodie has officially declared a full-blown musical beef, but their recent exchanges have exposed tensions that appear to have existed beneath the surface for years.
How the latest tension started
The latest chapter began on September 7, 2026, when Sarkodie addressed his SarkNation fanbase.
The rapper called on his supporters to promote his music without attacking other artistes or engaging in toxic fan wars. On the surface, the message appeared to be a call for peace within Ghanaian music's increasingly aggressive online fan culture.
Stonebwoy, however, did not appear convinced.
Rather than accepting the message as a general appeal to fans, he questioned whether Sarkodie was in the best position to preach against toxicity and artiste rivalry given what Stonebwoy believes has been Sarkodie's own conduct within the industry.
That response changed the conversation.
What could have remained a discussion about fan behaviour quickly became a direct conversation between two artistes about principles, relationships, accountability and past incidents.
Stonebwoy's challenge to Sarkodie
Stonebwoy's response was much bigger than a simple social-media jab.
He questioned the principles behind Sarkodie's message and challenged the rapper to reconcile his public advice with his actions and relationships within the music industry.
One of Stonebwoy's central arguments was that artistes should not simply preach against toxicity without acknowledging their own role in situations that have created tension.
He also questioned what Sarkodie believed Stonebwoy owed him, arguing that if the positions were reversed, he would not have reached out without first offering what he considered a genuine apology.
Stonebwoy maintained that collaborating or working together was never necessarily the problem. He pointed to Sarkodie's team attending his BHIM Festival and his own history of publicly celebrating Sarkodie's achievements as evidence that professional cooperation had never been off the table.
His argument ultimately came down to accountability.
“WE cannot omit Accountability and Responsibility to the same issues that we seek to fix,” Stonebwoy wrote.
For Stonebwoy, therefore, the issue was apparently bigger than whether the two artistes could work together.
It was about whether the people speaking about unity and peace were also willing to take responsibility for the things that had caused division in the first place.
Sarkodie fires back: “What is your problem?”
Sarkodie did not allow Stonebwoy's accusations to go unanswered.
In his response, the rapper rejected Stonebwoy's interpretation of their private conversation and denied saying that artistes should simply “play along” with situations when it benefits them.
Sarkodie revealed that during a phone conversation with Stonebwoy, his first question was essentially what the actual problem was.
He also questioned why Stonebwoy had interpreted his social-media message as being directed at him.
Sarkodie's position was straightforward: if he had not named Stonebwoy or intentionally targeted him, why had Stonebwoy taken the message personally?
The rapper also insisted that he had never used social media to indirectly attack Stonebwoy. He argued that he does not allow fans to manufacture connections between unrelated posts and only concerns himself with what the person involved actually thinks.
Sarkodie also brought up their professional relationship.
According to him, if he genuinely had a problem with Stonebwoy, he would not have been the person to call and invite him to perform at his Rapperholic show.
He further argued that Stonebwoy's association with people who may have disrespected him does not automatically mean Stonebwoy supports those individuals' behaviour.
That distinction is important to Sarkodie's defence: working with someone, greeting someone or maintaining a professional relationship does not necessarily mean endorsing everything that person has done.
The Shatta Wale connection
To understand why some fans immediately connected the current tension to a larger issue, it is necessary to look back several months.
In late May 2026, Sarkodie and Shatta Wale made a surprise joint appearance at a Kweku Smoke concert in London.
Stonebwoy subsequently posted a cryptic message describing certain industry friendships as being based on “interests and timing” rather than genuine affection. He referred to the idea as a “convenient friendship.”
Stonebwoy did not explicitly name Sarkodie or Shatta Wale in the post.
However, because of the timing, fans widely interpreted the message as a reference to the two artistes. Sarkodie later addressed the matter and pointed out that Stonebwoy had not actually mentioned his name.
That episode became an important background to the current dispute.
It also illustrates one of the defining problems with Ghanaian celebrity social media: a post does not necessarily need to contain a name for audiences to decide who it is about.
Fans interpret timing, relationships, photographs, emojis, interviews and seemingly unrelated statements.
Once those interpretations gain momentum, the artistes themselves are often forced to respond.
Then came the “jollof” story
Just when the dispute seemed to be centred on principles and social-media behaviour, an old story resurfaced — and it involved jollof rice.
Stonebwoy reportedly revealed that Sarkodie had once visited his home to apologise following a disagreement connected to the Telecel Ghana Music Awards.
According to Stonebwoy's account, he prepared jollof rice for Sarkodie during that visit.
That detail quickly became one of the biggest talking points surrounding the feud, with social-media users turning the story into jokes, memes and commentary.
Sarkodie subsequently appeared to respond amid the online reaction by posting a video featuring preacher Osofo Kyiriabosom delivering a fiery warning, although he did not directly explain the post as a response to the jollof story.
The jollof episode may sound humorous, but its significance is actually much deeper.
It brought a private reconciliation attempt into a very public argument.
And once private history enters a public dispute, both parties can begin presenting different versions of what happened — which is exactly what appears to be happening now.
The 2020 Black Love Concert controversy
The current argument also reopened one of the most uncomfortable chapters in the relationship between Stonebwoy and Sarkodie: the 2020 confrontation involving Sarkodie's manager, Angel Town.
In August 2020, Stonebwoy was removed from Sarkodie's Black Love virtual concert following a confrontation involving Angel Town.
Reports at the time said Stonebwoy had hit Sarkodie's manager. Sarkodie later acknowledged that Stonebwoy had hit Angel Town.
Stonebwoy subsequently apologised to Sarkodie and Angel Town and visited Angel after the incident.
However, Stonebwoy disputed other allegations surrounding the incident, particularly claims that he had brandished a weapon.
In later interviews, he maintained that the situation had been misunderstood and expressed disappointment that the matter had been reported to the police. He also said he had been subjected to serious allegations that he disputed.
The 2020 controversy eventually appeared to cool.
In 2022, Stonebwoy even described his relationship with Sarkodie as being fine, saying there was no problem between them.
But the events of 2020 clearly remain relevant to the current disagreement because Stonebwoy has now revisited his version of what happened.
Stonebwoy's version of what happened in 2020
During a recent TikTok Live, Stonebwoy revisited the Black Love Concert controversy.
He claimed that he had been kept backstage for hours despite being unwell before tensions eventually escalated around Angel Town.
Stonebwoy maintained that he did not intentionally assault Angel and said he later apologised after being informed that his hand had made contact with Angel's eye.
He also revisited the police-report issue and disputed claims that he had been carrying weapons at the time.
Angel Town has now entered the renewed conversation as well.
He responded to Stonebwoy's claims and shared WhatsApp screenshots which he said presented a different version of events surrounding arrangements connected to a BHIM Festival appearance.
This has transformed the dispute from a simple Stonebwoy-versus-Sarkodie argument into something broader, involving people from both artists' camps.
Is this really a new beef?
That is perhaps the most interesting question.
Technically, there is no confirmed diss-track battle between Stonebwoy and Sarkodie at the moment.
There has been no formal announcement of a musical war, and neither artiste has released a song explicitly declaring war on the other.
What exists right now is a public dispute built around old grievances and different interpretations of events.
DancehallMag described the latest situation as a social-media clash in which both artistes have referenced private conversations and past dynamics. The publication also noted that the public is seeing only fragments of what appears to be a longer-running tension.
That distinction matters.
Calling it a “beef” makes for a strong headline, but the substance is more complicated.
Stonebwoy appears to be challenging Sarkodie's consistency and principles.
Sarkodie, meanwhile, appears to be challenging Stonebwoy's interpretation of his actions and motives.
Neither argument is simply about music.
Two different ideas of loyalty
At the heart of the disagreement appears to be a question that has followed Ghanaian music for years:
What does loyalty between artistes actually mean?
For one side, maintaining relationships with people involved in previous conflicts can be interpreted as a failure to stand by one's colleague.
For the other, professional relationships do not automatically constitute betrayal.
Sarkodie's response makes that distinction clear. He argued that Stonebwoy's decision to associate with people who had disrespected him did not mean Stonebwoy supported their disrespect.
That is a fundamentally different understanding of loyalty.
Stonebwoy's position, meanwhile, appears to place greater emphasis on accountability and consistency — particularly when senior or influential artistes publicly call for unity and responsible behaviour.
This is why the argument has become bigger than two personalities.
It touches on how Ghana's music industry handles friendship, competition, reconciliation, business relationships and fan loyalty.
The fans have become part of the battlefield
Another major factor is the role of the fanbases.
Sarkodie has one of Ghana's strongest rap fan communities through SarkNation, while Stonebwoy commands a massive following through BHIM Nation.
Whenever either artiste makes a controversial statement, supporters quickly begin analysing every word.
One side looks for evidence that its favourite artiste has been disrespected.
The other looks for evidence that the opposing artiste is responsible.
DancehallMag noted that reactions to the current dispute have largely divided along fan-loyalty lines, while some industry observers have expressed frustration that artistes of this stature are allowing grievances to play out publicly.
That creates another problem.
A disagreement between two people can become a war between thousands of fans.
And once the fanbases become emotionally invested, reconciliation becomes much harder.
What happens next?
The biggest question now is whether the dispute remains online or moves into music.
Stonebwoy and Sarkodie are both experienced enough to understand the power of a diss record.
A direct lyrical exchange between two of Ghana's most prominent artistes would attract enormous attention locally and internationally.
But it could also permanently change their relationship.
For now, the situation remains unresolved.
Sarkodie has denied deliberately shading Stonebwoy and has maintained that he has continued to support and reach out to him.
Stonebwoy, on the other hand, has made it clear that his concerns go beyond one social-media post. His argument centres on accountability, past treatment and what he sees as contradictions between Sarkodie's public messages and his private conduct.
Neither side appears ready to completely concede.
More than just another Ghanaian music beef
The Stonebwoy–Sarkodie situation is fascinating because it does not fit neatly into the traditional Ghanaian “beef” formula.
There is no obvious diss song yet.
There is no declaration of war.
Instead, there are years of history, private conversations, professional relationships, old misunderstandings, fan interpretations and unresolved questions now being placed under the public microscope.
The 2020 Black Love Concert incident never completely disappeared from the story.
The 2026 Sarkodie–Shatta Wale reunion added another layer.
Stonebwoy's comments about “convenient friendship” introduced questions about loyalty.
Sarkodie's message to his fans brought the issue of toxicity to the surface.
Stonebwoy's response turned the conversation toward accountability.
Sarkodie's rebuttal challenged Stonebwoy's interpretation.
And the resurfacing of the jollof story showed just how much private history exists between the two camps.
For now, the most accurate description may not be “Stonebwoy and Sarkodie are officially at war.”
It is that two Ghanaian music giants are publicly confronting old tensions that never appear to have been completely resolved.
Whether that tension eventually produces a full lyrical battle, another private reconciliation, or simply fades away will depend largely on what happens next.
But one thing is already clear: the relationship between Stonebwoy and Sarkodie is far more complicated than a single social-media post.
And Ghanaian music fans are watching every move.
